Arthritis

Arthritis is the general term for inflammation in a joint. Many people with arthritis experience pain and difficulty moving around. There are many forms of arthritis but osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are common forms which affect the joints of the feet.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It is caused by stress, trauma and wear and tear of cartilage. It is very common in older people.
Podiatrists at Orthotika will provide advice including:

  •  The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  •  Suitable footwear.
  •  Suitable insoles or orthotics.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the more severe forms of arthritis although it is much less common. It is more likely to affect women. Inflammation of the joint lining occurs as a result of the body’s immune system turning on itself. If you are diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis regular foot checks are required at least annually. Podiatrists at Orthotika will advise on:

  •     Footwear which will minimise joint damage and pain.
  •     Insoles/orthotics which minimise joint damage and pain.
  •     Regular exercise, an appropriate diet and weight loss can all help reduce the impact of arthritis.
